Description:
In 1928, Alexander Fleming, a Scottish bacteriologist, was working in his laboratory at St. Mary's Hospital in London. He was studying a culture of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria when he noticed that a mold had contaminated one of the plates.
Fleming was not pleased to see the mold, but he decided to investigate it. He discovered that the mold was producing a substance that was killing the bacteria. He called this substance penicillin.
Fleming was excited about his discovery but didn't know how to develop it into a medicine. He didn't have the resources or expertise to do it himself.
Fleming published his findings in a scientific journal, but his work was ignored. In1940s, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain, two researchers at University of Oxford, began to work on developing penicillin into a medicine and administering to patients.
Fleming, Florey, and Chain were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945 for their work on penicillin.
